Part 7: Area in Geometry

The goal of part 7:  Area in Geometry is for students to reason about relationships among shapes to determine area.  Students will find the areas of right triangles, other triangles, and special quadrilaterals by decomposing the shapes, rearranging or moving pieces, and relating the shapes to rectangles.  Using these methods, students will discuss, develop, and justify formulas for areas of triangles and parallelograms.  Students will also draw polygons in the coordinate plane.  Even more specifically, students will:
  • Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes.  Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
  • Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate.  Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
