Today students reviewed their chapter 7 post-test with Mr. Hartwell. Next, students took time to preview chapter 8 skills. Mr. Hartwell provided all of the PowerPoint presentation for all of the lessons for all of chapter 8 with answer keys that the students can preview. The students may also take time to use the online textbook to preview chapter 8 (students were given their usernames and passwords). The homework for tonight is to continue to preview chapter 8 skills for the pre-test tomorrow.

Today students enjoyed a Scholastic Math magazine. This is a magazine geared toward middle school students and contains fun articles that relate to math. For example, today we focused on an interesting two page article that related geometry (what we are currently studying) to snowboarding. The article is titled "Extreme Angles". One of my students has seen an albino deer roaming the fields around Troy recently (see his picture, above). This is a very rare animal. According to this website about one in 100,000 fawn births are albino. The deer may also be piebald, which are also very rare. Therefore:

(n/100,000) = a

Where "n" is the number of deer in a region, "a" is the predicted number of albino deer. The sentence above is an algebraic equation. If I can approximate the number of deer living in Avon Lake, I can calculate the likely number of albino deer in the region.

According to this website the ideal holding capacity for deer in Northeast Ohio is about 30 deer per square mile. I can express this as an equation as well:

30(m) = i

Where "m" is the square miles of a given location and "i" is the ideal holding capacity of deer for that given location. Avon Lake is 11.1 square miles.

According to this website deer populations can increase as much as 82% in a year. Using this fact, I can write this algebraic equation:

0.82(x) + x= y

Where "x" is the original deer population and "y" is the maximum deer population the following year.

A Couple of Questions:

What is the "ideal" deer population of Avon Lake?
If Avon Lake hosts the "ideal" number deer, how many albino deer would we predict to live in Avon Lake?
If Avon Lake hosts the "ideal" number of deer one year and they enjoy the maximum amount of population growth in one year, what will the population be the following year (given that none die)?

PRE-ALGEBRA
Students in pre-algebra also finished their Discovery testing online, then used this resource to practice solving equations with rational numbers and fill in their guided notes. We hope to take a mid-point quiz this Wednesday, October 19th. This quiz will include skills from the first six lessons in chapter three. I've also noticed that many students are still struggling with scientific notation. If so, I recommend using this website to practice. Another area for practice is converting repeating decimals to fractions.

Students practiced multiplying decimals by using a ten by ten grid. Then, they worked in their journals to complete journal pages 63 and64. The homework assignment for tonight is to complete Study Link 2.6 and to watch this video.

I also noticed that several students are unable to consistently multiply correctly. There are many excellent free websites that students can use to practice this very important skill. Here is a free website that is kid-friendly and gives learners the practice they need and here is a place to practice multiplication.

Finally, students worked in small groups and with Mr. Hartwell to make sure they understood the importance of lining numbers up by their decimal point when adding or subtracting. Students now have their Study Link packet and tonight's homework is to complete Study Link 2.3.

PRE-ALGEBRA
Because the chapter 2 test is Monday, today's math class was a series of stations designed for students to practice the most difficult skills. Students worked both independently and in small groups with handouts, computers, and Math24 game cards. Today in Everyday Math we learned how to write really big numbers in standard notation. To do this, we watched the video above, then worked in our journals independently. Finally, we concluded the day's practice session with group work in which students discussed their journal work, compared responses, and worked towards a unanimous agreement on best answers.

In Pre-Algebra we reviewed last night's homework, which was changing numbers from exponential to standard notation and vice versa. Then, we learned about several properties of exponents. Tonight's homework is pages ninety to ninety-one, questions ten through forty-eight even. Today in Everyday Math, we analyzed the results of our first post-test. Overall, the classes all did an excellent job in that all students showed improvement from pre to post-test. The average pre-test score was 40%, while the average post-test score was 85%! Next, we took the unit 2 pre-test. The homework assignment for tonight is to complete both sides of the percent/ratio paper and for students to complete their reflection form and bring their graded unit 1 test back to school Tuesday.

Today in Everyday Math we took our first unit test! I showed the two minute video (above) which reviews helpful test-taking skills. Then, students had forty-eight minutes to complete a test with ten questions. The test contains five multiple choice questions, three short answers questions, and two extended response questions. The results are posted on gradebookwizard. I will post the average results next week. The homework assignment for the weekend is to complete math box 1.13.

In Pre-Algebra we reviewed the homework assignment, practiced a few problems together, then took a small mid-point quiz. The homework assignment for the weekend is to complete questions one through twenty-three all on page two.

Today in Everyday Math we went to the computer lab so that students could practice accessing some of the many resources available on the blog. They were able to complete their guided notes and a few practice problems in preparation for the unit one post-test tomorrow. Tonight's homework is to study for the test. In Pre-Algebra we reviewed last night's homework, then built on that knowledge by learning how to solve inequalities with integers. We took a small quiz to check understanding, then started working on our homework.

Students worked independently to complete their guided notes using the Student Reference Book. They, then, worked in small teams to check their work. After that, they played a math game called Landmark Shark to practice their skills of computing median, mode, and range from small data sets. Homework for tonight is to study for the test.

Today in Everyday Math we did a warm-up question and watched the place value video. We then discussed the definitions of biased sample and random sample. Students, then, practiced in their journals doing pages forty to forty-three. We completed the lesson with small group work. The homework for tonight is for students to fix all of the remaining problems on their pre-test that are still incorrect.

Because the Everyday Math test is Friday, we will use Wednesday and Thursday as review days. Students should spend some time each evening studying for the test. Their pre-test, guided notes, and math journal make excellent study tools. The right-hand side of the blog, however, offers many more tools including a hotlist and practice tests with answer keys.

In Pre-Algebra we watched the two videos above. While the first one is a joke based on place value misunderstanding, the second is based on noun misunderstanding. When the laughter died down, we reviewed last night's homework on subtracting integers. We, then practiced multiplying and dividing integers and filled in our guided notes for lesson 2.3. The homework assignment for tonight is pages seventy to seventy-one, questions two through forty-six even.

Bonus: You can earn 5 ROAR cards if you write a skit that uses misunderstanding of integers (see your guided notes). You can earn another 5 ROAR cards if you perform the skit for the class.

Today in Everyday Math, we completed a warm-up question in which students decided which graph is best used to show change over time (line graph). We then worked in our journals, doing pages thirty-six through thirty-nine. These pages gave us a chance to practice reading misleading graphs. Finally, I assigned Study Link 1.11 as the homework assignment. This Study Link mirrors today's lesson perfectly, as students are asked several questions about a misleading graph.

Bonus: Want to earn ten ROAR cards? All you have to do is cut a misleading graph from a newspaper or magazine and write a paragraph explaining WHY you think it is misleading. See journal pages thirty-six through thirty-nine for help.

Today in Everyday Math we practiced finding the area and perimeter of rectangles. We reviewed the fact that area is equal to the length times the width and that area is length multiplied by the width. We also looked to see if there was a relationship between the area and perimeter.

In Pre-Algebra we started the second chapter, which is focused on integers. Today we practiced adding integers by doing several warm-up examples, then practicing the skill by filling in our guided notes. I used a PowerPoint presentation with examples and definitions to help students practice. I also gave students the first part of their guided notes packet. Finally, homework assigned for the weekend is pages sixty-two through sixty-three, questions two through forty-two even.

Today in Everyday Math we did a warm-up activity using our Activexpressions where we created circle graphs using class data. I then demonstrated how to use a geometry template to measure the percentage of circle graph sectors. Students, then, worked independently in the math journals pages twenty-nine through thirty two. Afterwards, students worked in teams of two or three to discuss their work. Finally, I announced the correct answers and assigned Study Link 1.9 as homework. The homework assignment is the same skill we practiced in class.

Today in Everyday Math we learned how to build and read histograms. Histograms are a type of bar graph that show how frequently data occurs. It's the first time students have learned this skill, so I've included a six minute instructional video (above) which provides a step-by-step example for building a histogram. I gave students a histogram worksheet and project outline. We will review the homework tomorrow in class. Students will work on the histogram project over the next two weeks.

In Pre-Algebra, we discussed the chapter one pre-test. I announced the correct answer to check for grading errors, then we analyzed the results by determining the landmarks for the test scores. Finally, we took the chapter two pre-test. The pre-test scores should be posted in gradebookwizard by the end of the week. No homework was assigned in pre-algebra.

Both Everyday Math and Pre-Algebra students will work on a histogram project this and next week. I will review the process of constructing a histogram in class and students will create a poster of their own histograms during advisory or while at home. I gave students the instructions today. Today in Everyday Math we reviewed last night's homework on broken line graphs, then worked together to practice building a vertical bar graph. Students, then, worked independently to practice creating, reading, and interpreting bar graphs. The homework assignment tonight, Study Link 1.7, is on the same skills. We still hope to take the final unit 1 test Friday of next week.

In Pre-Algebra, we reviewed last night's homework, then took the first post-test of the year. The class pre-test average was 54%, while today's test (the post-test) average score was 91%! This demonstrates significant growth and learning, good job! The homework for tonight (p.59 q.1-26 all) will front-load the students for the chapter two pre-test tomorrow.

Today in Everyday Math we did a warm up question in which we built a line graph. Then, we worked independently to practice making, reading, and interpreting line graphs in our journals pages eighteen through twenty. Tonight's homework involves the same skills and is Study Link 1.6. We hope to take our final unit one test Friday of next week.

In Pre-Algebra we reviewed the weekend's homework, then worked in small teams as we rotated through seven stations. Each station involved an important skill from chapter one. By the end of the period, we had practiced all of the critical skills for chapter one. We plan to take the test tomorrow! Homework for tonight is page fifty-five, questions one through twenty-five all.

Today in Everyday Math we checked our homework (Study Link 1.4) and completed our warm-up work which consisted of constructing a stem-and-leaf plot then calculating the landmarks (mean, median, mode, range, minimum, maximum). After that, we assembled into groups to play a game called Landmark Shark. It uses normal playing cards and is a fun way to practice calculating landmarks. You can see how to play by watching the video above.

In Pre-Algebra we reviewed our homework from last night (graphing equations) and then went to the computer lab. There, students took notes while using a PowerPoint slideshow of lesson 1.9 in conjunction with their books. This lesson marked the last lesson of the first chapter. Monday we will review all of the chapter one skills, focusing on the final three lessons. We will then take our first post-test on Tuesday of next week! Your child has guided notes, a graded pre-test, and other resources to help them prepare.
